I channelled fictional book and film heroine Bridgette Jones recently and purchased a pair of enormous “pants”. And not the sucky-in, torturous shapewear kind either. These knickers were silky seam-free and pretty and reminiscent of a bygone era… and pulling them up and up and up towards my belly button felt surprisingly satisfying. Like I was discovering some secret long since lost. That full briefs can be saucy and sexy and not at all like the underwear hanging on your grandmother’s washing line.
Caution. Curves ahead. Saucy big knickers may cause involuntary sauntering.
Now, I’ve not transitioned my entire underwear drawer (yet) and still only own one pair of said big knickers. But I have gained a far greater appreciation for their magnificence. And it seems I’m not the only one. An increasing number of lingerie stores and online retailers are stocking a wider range of sweet and sexy retro-inspired underwear, and women the world over are lapping it up.
Maybe because the whole retro-chic pinup-esque thing is so popular right now. Maybe because burlesque dames like Dita Von Teese have made fuller undies look so stunning. Maybe because even pop stars like Miley and Jessie J and Rihanna have rocked them onstage, in an industry where less is most definitely considered more. Maybe because an increasing number of women are throwing down the gauntlet and saying, “fuck yeah, I love my body the way it is thankyouverymuch”.
And unlike many underwear trends that have really only suited one body shape or another, big knickers can look super sexy on anyone – you just have to werk them with the right attitude. Whether you’re twiggy or boyish or athletic or curvy or built like a Victoria’s Secret Angel, you’re destined to look fab in a pair of burlesque-style briefs. Mark my words.
- DO try on a range of styles and fabrics and colors to get a feel for what looks great on you.
- DO try a matching va-va-voom bra.
- DON'T feel you have to go match-matchy if that's not your style.
- DO channel your inner pinup.
- DON’T wear them with ultra low-rise jeans (because that would just be a bit weird, right?).
- DO consider keeping them just for bed if they don’t work with your wardrobe.
What’s your current underwear obsession?
